"You get what you inspect, not what you expect."

Managing director of 3 businesses, Kevin would always ask for very specific (almost pedantically accurate and oversimplified) details and data concerning the ins-and-outs of his businesses from his staff. It never ceased to amaze me the things he would discover from his employees when he did this, it also compelled his staff to have an extremely well rounded and accurate summary of the ongoings in their field of responsibility. Kevin knew that if he wanted to know his business well he must rely on inspection, not expectation, a lesson that can be applied to every aspect in life, and one that has stayed with me ever since.
