Quote - Charles Bukowski

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

'Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?'

This quote from the famous writer doesn't just apply to your career as it suggestively leans towards, but affects every aspect of your life. Particularly how you act in front of different people. For example, something as simple and commonplace as when someone does or doesn't laugh at a joke you tell. If they don't laugh, you might alter your behaviour in accordance to what they find entertaining, thus less likely to instinctually be yourself around that person. Ironically, then, moving forward you then might tell different jokes or none at all, attracting people who think you are something other than your definition of the natural self, which in turn would increase the requirement for the unnatural behaviour, and so on in a potentially exponential fashion.
